"Going Old School"

With the suspension out of the way, it was time to address the driveability concerns that we had with Blackbird. The original Tuned Port Injection was a great concept by GM, but the original design had several flaws that were counterproductive to the performance we were seeking.

With the interest in retrofitting carburetors to Tuned Port applications, we decided to retrofit Blackbird with a carbureted induction system. Our build plan included nitrous oxide injection, and with an undercarb plate, we needed increased hood clearance. This was the primary decision to use the Greenwood scoop. Of course, the scoop adds to the "meanness factor", but that’s a side benefit.

The original TPI manifold was removed, and we replaced it with an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, topped with a 750CFM Edelbrock carburetor. We used a Mallory return-style adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and plumbed everything with AN fittings and steel-braided hoses from XRP. The factory fuel lines were reused with special EFI to AN fittings from Earl’s Performance to connect to the regulator. We also replaced the TPI pump in the tank with a lower pressure TBI pump, which provides a steady 15 lbs of line pressure (more than enough for the carb and nitrous system).

For our power adder, we installed a POWERSTAR undercarb adjustable plate nitrous system from NS, with purge valve and window switching. We now have the option of up to 175 additional horsepower "on demand" for any occasion that requires it.

We replaced the distributor with a modified HEI with MSD coil, cap and rotor. We used custom cut-to-fit 8.5MM MSD Super Conductor ignition wires and routed them through some of our Made For You Smoothie wire looms for a clean looking install. Cosmetic enhancements include Proform valve covers and air cleaner in black powdercoat for a "no nonsense" appearance.

We then turned our attention to the interior...
